Stop that noise

Article Abstract:

The EC is pressuring manufacturers of household appliances to make their machines less noisy and asking companies to label each product with a noise statement showing how much noise it makes. Consumers are also showing an interest in quieter household appliances. Companies such as Hotpoint and Robert Bosch Domestic Appliances are making heavy investments in noise research and development. Lawnmower makers have already had to comply with EC noise regulations and their products must now carry an EC label giving their sound level and be certified by an approved sound laboratory.

Scher talent

Article Abstract:

Paula Scher has emerged as a successful graphic designer, despite the misgivings of her mother. She has received more that 300 design awards, Grammy nominations and medals from the New York Art Directors' Club. She claims her success is due to the volume of her work and the fact that she was able to learn from her failures on the job. In the 90's the industry is such that design graduates are no longer able to do this. She has worked for CBS Records, Atlantic Records, Time magazine and Pentagram, in addition to having established her own consultancy.
