Strange brew

Article Abstract:

Architect and artist David Hertz developed Syndecrete, a cement-based, polymer and resin-free material which can be made from natural minerals and recylced materials. In addition, the material does not melt nor does it emit gases, making it more environment-friendly than wood, concrete andsynthetic materials. Syndecrete resembles granite or limestone, but is more stain-resistant than these two materials. The material has as many uses as the recycled materials that go into its production.

Zensational

Article Abstract:

Architect Larry Rouch of Seattle's Larry Rouch and Co. has created a Zen-like space for the offices of Tim Girvin Design that incorporates the Japanese aesthetic of simplicity, economy and humility, though with a dramatic flair. Tim Girvin's collection of oriental artifacts are complemented by lighting and surface textures intended to evoke a Japanese rural village street. The office strikes a balance of light and dark, serenity and activity.

Glare and VDT

Article Abstract:

The Illuminating Engineering Society has produced a material entitled 'VDT Lighting,' which provides guidelines for controlling reflective glare, eye strain and headache associated with working in an video diplay terminal (VDT) environment. Workstation design should incoporate the principle of eye adaptation. The best approach to limiting glare and eyestrain is to use low-brightness direct fixtures and strategically located indirect fixtures.
