The perception of sound

Article Abstract:

The Temple Hoyne Buell Theater, the newest addition to the Denver Performing Arts Complex has a capacity of 2,800 seats. Design firm van Djik, Johnson and Partners together with acoustics specialists R. Lawrence Kirkegaard and Asso and theater design consultant Roger Morgan Studio based the theater design on the principle of maximizing sensory contact with the stage. This was accomplished by setting three speaker clusters above the proscenium and locating smaller speakers in strategic areas. An intermediary loge section was built to float like a necklace to maximize viewing spapce as well as acoustics.

Checkpoint Charlie redux

Article Abstract:

Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM), a leading American designing firm, won a competition in 1992 for proposing a unique plan to promote city development in Berlin after the German unification. The project, situated at the memorable Checkpoint Charlie Gateway, is developing rapidly. The stone and steel structure, to be built on the lines of state-of-the-art building techniques rarely found in German designing, will combine housing units in mainly official areas. This symbol of the newly evolving Berlin will play a predominant part in the changing scenario towards greater unity.
