Tuning in children

Article Abstract:

Architect William McDonough designed a day care center in Frankfurt, Germany which combined environmental considerations with the children's requirements. McDonough designed the center along the belief that children need to have some control over their surroundings. The roof was fitted with shutters which could be opened in certain areas depending on the weather and the activity. The center was also fitted with underground storage tanks for the collection of solar heat. Finally, the building was built with materials which have undergone ecologically-friendly processes.
