Virginia's design legacy

Article Abstract:

The distinct architecture of Virginia's colonial houses is due to the attempts of Virginia tobacco planters to emulate English tastes using local materials. The Classical tradition was in full flower in Europe, and it was this style that hired English workmen applied on Virginia planters' houses.

Historic hues

Article Abstract:

Glebe House in Woodbury, CT belonged to the cleric John Rutgers Marshall in the 18th century. A garden designed by Gertrude Jekyll in 1927 surrounds the restored house, but the furnishings reflect the American Revolution period. The first American Episcopalian bishop was chosen in this house.

New Hampshire is a favorite place of visitors because of its inviting scenery and historic buildings of Colonial and Federal architecture. The Yankee Trail is a motor trip that takes visitors to all the worthwhile sites in New Hampshire.
