When numbers lie

Article Abstract:

Newspapers need to be careful when creating visual representations of numbers and statistics. Quite often, graphic designers fail to capture the context of the numbers and end up making unacceptable errors in reportage. Three errors commonly found in newspapers are the nonreportage of margins of error when announcing poll results, the failure to use a constant base when reporting percentages, and the noninclusion of inflation-adjusted figures when reporting increases in spending or taxes over time.

It's big so it must be good

Article Abstract:

Most of the UK newspapers publish one or more thicker magazine supplements with more color allocation and advertising messages. One striking element common among the tabloids is the large size and scale of the images that take over two or more pages. These are reflections of the priorities of designers in terms of space allocation and the designers' role in the production process.
