Robert Schumann's "Davidbundlertanze"

Article Abstract:

Davidsbundlertanze--literally "Dances of the band of David" --refers to Robert Schumann's circle of associates, both real and imagined, dedicated to advancing progressive artistic ideals and fighting the Philistines who resisted them. George Balanchine met the composer on an Olympian artistic level in staging a work of such elusive character and his innate classicism formed the perfect counterpart to Schumann's sometimes extravagant and heated expressivity.
