"Arabian Coffee" in the land of the sweets

Article Abstract:

The 'Arabian' dance also called 'Coffee' in The Nutcracker, a nineteenth-century Russian ballet, disseminates its own particular brand of 'Arabianism' in one location after another, year after year. The analysis of 'coffee' relies mainly on close readings of several 'Arabians' and a consideration of them in relation to various conceptual schemes, including Laban Movement Analysis, Orientalism aspects o feminist theory and reception theory.
