Dance, business, and politics: letters from Mary Wigman to Hanya Holm, 1930-1971

Article Abstract:

The correspondence between Hanya Holm and Mary Wigman is one between two female artists who were key figures in the 20th century debate about modernism. Wigman was Holm's teacher and mentor and her fate because of World War II and German Reconstruction provides a contrast to Holm's realization of the American dream. The letters, translated here by Marianne Forster, are a treasure-trove of artistry, female friendships, and transnational connections during five key 20th century decades.

Mary Wigman, a magician

Article Abstract:

A former pianist and then dance student of Mary Wigman disciple Erina Brady gives her recollections. Brady was teaching in Dublin, Ireland, but after World War II ended Robinson was able to study with Wigman herself in Montreux, Switzerland. A correspondence with Wigman began and Robinson also wrote articles for French magazines on her experiences at the school. The articles appear here in English.
