Dance research in Italy

Article Abstract:

A small group of dance researchers is emerging in Italy despite the minimal opportunities for this field and the lack of training available in colleges or universities. Several Italian dance historians, such as Alessandro Pontremoli, Patrizia La Rocca and Andrea Francalanci have published works and conducted workshops on dance research. The Accademia Nazionale di Danza includes theoretical work in its requirements for students, while the Villa I Tatti in Florence and the Comitato Nazionale Italiano Music provides research materials on dance.

Dialogue: dance history - current methodologies

Article Abstract:

Dance history is on an inferior footing compared to its sister disciplines. There is a dearth of first-rate scholars doing original research or dealing with pre-20th century periods. Simplistic approaches in research will not help dance history as a serious academic subject or contribute to the funding of dance research. There needs to be a dialogue between archival historians and deconstructionists or poststructuralists. The poststructuralists show the link between the dance form and its discourse.
