Swaying to an Indian beat . . . Dola goes my diasporic heart: Exploring Hindi film dance

Article Abstract:

Bollywood dance has become a term used by film professionals, amateur performers and audiences to refer to dances choreographed to Hindi film songs, which has certain essential ingredients such as costume choices, facial expressions, gestures, wrist whirls, and turns. Through an analysis of the 'Dola Re Dola' film dance sequence featured in a commercially successful remake of the Hindi film 'Devdas' in 2002 and its restaging at a South Asian cultural event at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the author tries to identify the multiple meanings associated with Hindi film dance.
