Gabriela Komleva: 'Symphony in C' in Leningrad

Article Abstract:

Gabriela Komleva has talked about the Bizet ballet, 'Symphony in C,' in which she danced at one time as a soloist. Recently the Maryinsky premiere of Georges Bizet's ballet choreographed by George Balanchine took place on the stage of the company's Leningrad theater. Komleva first saw the ballet in 1962 during the American tour of the Kirov and was struck with a sense of perfection by the Balanchine choreography and the mastery of the soloist. She feels a tradition of respect for experience and seniority in ballet is dying. Dancers have pushed ballet masters aside, which will not work, she asserts.

Sergei Vikharev: Rehearsing 'Symphony in C.' (ballet dancer)(Interview)

Article Abstract:

Sergei Vikharev, ballet dancer, has discussed his experience in rehearsing 'Symphony in C,' the first George Balanchine work he has actually performed in, since he had a leg injury that prevented one previous attempt. He and the other dancers of the Maryinsky Theater, which he considers the home of Balanchine, find 'Le Palais de Cristal' difficult, although the combinations individually they find fun. The hardest thing for them is the accent on the downbeat and counting everything. Watching videotapes of earlier performances helps rehearsals.

'Symphony in C': an obscure object of desire

Article Abstract:

George Balanchine's 'Symphony in C' appeared in the repertory of the Maryinsky Theater in the 1996-97 ballet season. The Balanchine Technique is preserved at the Maryinsky. Many things are involved in the Balanchine style. The aesthetic of 'Symphony in C' is retrospective; the Maryinsky purports to be a retrospective institution, primarily. At the Maryinsky the Balanchine 'neoclassicism' is mainly an intellectual form of art.
