Notes on 'Giselle' and 'Paquita': the probable authorship of the E-major variation in Act 1 of 'Giselle' and problems arising from the Grand Pas from 'Paquita'

Article Abstract:

This article presents notes on the historical background of two ballet pieces, a ballet music recording and a videorecording. The first one asserts that the music of the E-major variation in Act 1 of 'Giselle' was written in 1878 by Minkus, and the second points out flaws in the assertion that the videorecording of the Kirov company performance of the Grand Pas in 'Paquita' is a re-creation of the 1881 version.

Borlin, masculinity, and 'L'Homme et son desir.'(Jean Borlin, a Reevaluation)

Article Abstract:

The article discusses what 'l'homme et son desir' had to say about nationalism, masculinity and homosexuality in Paris during the 1910s and 1920s. In postwar France, recently threatened with emasculation, the enemy was feminine, and this ballet performs on stage the battles over masculinity and respectability that the French were fighting to win in their day-to-day lives.
