Recent acquisitions of the Dance Collection of the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts

Article Abstract:

The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts' Dance Collection has been built from purchases of published books and video tapes, original work about dance troupes initiated by the Collection and from large donations and individual gifts. Over the last four years the Collection has acquired 1,600 books and 270 videotapes. Among these are some unique acquisitions such as 'Photographic Archives of Ballet News,' and the 'Rouben Ter-Artunian Collection.' The individual gifts total more than 1400 and make the collection original and representative of many major dancers.

Living history, performing memory: Devadasi women in Telugu-speaking South India

Article Abstract:

'Devadasi' is used as a term in Sanskrit, referring to women with temple associations throughout various parts of South India, Maharashtra and Orissa. In precolonial South India, Devadasis in coastal Andhra performed in three contexts, in the temple as 'gudi seva', in the court as concerts, and in the private home of a patron where the performance was called 'meju vani', and until lately, the presence of devadasis at weddings was extremely important and their status was as an 'ever-auspicious woman', providing blessings to the bride.
