Dance research in Tanzania

Article Abstract:

The National Dance Troupe begin researching dance in Tanzania in 1964 in an effort to promote cultural activities and popularize national dance. Their goals were to study traditional performances, costumes and music and then create new dances that would represent the cultural heritage of the new independent Tanzania. The Dance Troupe was disbanded in 1981, but dance research continues in 1998 under the auspices the Ministry of Education and Culture as well as other academic institutions.
