"That Englishman Abroad": a tribute to Antony Tudor

Article Abstract:

Dancer Antony Tudor went "abroad" to America from England in 1939 as a young man of thirty-one. He stayed abroad for his entire life. One of the many controversies that surrounded him always came from that fact; it went to the heart of Tudor as a man and as an artist. Ninette de Valois was his primary bete noire. She used the words "that Englishman abroad" to refer to him. They reflect her feelings and the British attitude toward Tudor and his "desertion" of his homeland as World War II began. The words reflect the feelings of regret of Tudor as well, but his were more complicated.

Notes on dark elegies

Article Abstract:

'Dark Elegies' is one of Antony Tudor's ballets that are rich and complex enough to warrant full-length studies in book form. Elegies is probably the Tudor ballet most dependent on nuance of gesture, body language, and total commitment.
