Three hybrid works at the Paris Opera, circa 1830

Article Abstract:

This article examines three popular works which were hybrids of opera and ballet, and were performed at the Paris Opera from 1828 to 1832. Issues include the Opera's sensitivity to trends of the popular Boulevard theaters, the comfortable relationship between opera and ballet which were closely related genres, and the methods of communication between singing and dancing characters onstage revealing that they 'spoke' the same language.

The earliest 'Giselle'? A preliminary report on a St. Petersburg manuscript

Article Abstract:

An analysis is presented of two hand-annotated scores of 'Giselle' along with speculation on how the early nineteenth century ballet was performed. Subjects include interrelationships between mime and dance as portrayed in the annotations.

La Belle Epoque was an age of dance elegance and gaiety in Parisian society from 1890 till World War I. It was mainly successful because of the beautiful women or courtesans that played important parts in that play.
