"Virtue (almost) triumphant" revisited: of sylphs and 'Silfidi.'

Article Abstract:

Selma Jeanne Cohen's 1964 article 'Virtue (almost) Triumphant', a survey of almost 300 ballet libretti located in the Music Division of The New York Public Library, deals with the dramatic conflict in which the power of evil threatens the noble and righteous. The analysis of Italian taste in her article can be applied to French ballets such as 'La Sylphide' and 'Giselle' by analyzing the changes which made them palatable to an Italian audience more used to melodrama. Differences between the Italian and the French styles are analyzed.

German 'Rites': a history of 'Le Sacre du Printemps' on the German stage

Article Abstract:

Stravinsky's ballet 'The Rite of Spring' has often been performed in Germany but has also been barred from the stage due to official disapproval. Because 'Rites' is a landmark of modernism, it has been presented mainly during periods of conflict between proponents of classical and modern styles. State intervention during the Nazi period and the era of Soviet domination of East Germany mediated the conflict between ballet and German dance. German reunification may affect this ongoing debate.

German 'Rites' revisited: an addendum to a history of 'Le Sacre du Printemps' on the German stage

Article Abstract:

Stagings of 'Le Sacre du Printemps' in Germany occurred during periods of conflict between the classical and modern dance traditions in that country. Marion Hermann staged the ballet in 1931, before the Nazi ban on Stravinsky took effect. East German choreographers did not challenge socialist realism until the 1970s, and a 1967 staging of 'Sacre' was an early harbinger of this challenge.
