Bushville (photo essay on a New York homeless village)(Shared Lives: The Communal Spirit Today)

Article Abstract:

The small houses built in 1987 from scavenged materials by a group of homeless Puerto Rican men in a New York lot turned into a tiny cooperative community. Homeless individuals and families moved into the 14 houses, grew food, managed the village and took care of one another. To many of the residents, their new home offered them a sense of purpose and respect. Complaints from nearby residents led to the city's demolition of the village in 1993.
