Champion Nigel Mansell has announced he will be leaving Formula One racing and joining IndyCar. Conversely, IndyCar champion Michael Andretti will be joining Formula One racing. Andretti will be the first American driver in Formula One since 1989.

There are no drivers from the US in Formula 1 racing. Teams hesitate to hire even top American drivers such as Michael Andretti and Al Unser, Jr because they are unfamiliar with the tracks and because they have no Formula 1 experience.
