Studies of twins show that genetics influence behaviour to a surprising extent. Scientists are able to estimate what proportion of personality and behaviour is caused by inherited tendencies but do not understand how life events can be altered by genetic factors. The findings have led to a shift in political philosophy in the West, with increased responsibility for individual behaviour being assigned to the person, rather than their schooling, family or social background.
