Hidden treasures from the vault: engraved gems from the Maxwell Sommerville collection

Article Abstract:

Art connoisseur Maxwell Sommerville's collection, housed at the University of Pennsylvania Museum in Philadelphia, boasts antique engraved gems that represent all historical periods. Sommerville established his collection of jewels and precious stones, which include amulets and talismans, post-classical cameos and stamp seals, during his long journeys throughout the world. Some of the engraved gems, however, became the subject of controversy as speculations about their authenticity abound, the very reason why the museum removed the entire collection from public view. The Sommerville collection was put back on display only after several decades of languishing in obscurity.
