A morphological characterization of Borrelia anserina

Article Abstract:

Electron microscopic study of negatively stained, ultra-thin sections of the cells of two strains of Borrelia anserina helps study their morphology and ultrastructure. The two strains from the US and Nigeria are helical, with a wavelength of 1.7 microns, and are 9 to 21 microns long and 0.22 to 0.26 microns wide. Every cell has a surface layer around it and multiplies by binary fission. The cells from the two strains have similar structures except for the number of flagella they carry, which is seven at each end in the US strain and eight in the Nigerian strain.

An unusual illegitimate recombination occurs in the linear-plasmid-encoded outer-surface protein A gene of Borrelia afzelii

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on an unusual illegitimate recombination in the linear-plasmid-encoded outer-surface protein A gene of Borrelia afzelii. The nature of the rearrangement following the deletion of a 96 bp DNA segment implies the occurrence of a strand slippage mechanism. Moreover, the variation mechanism may have been employed by the borrelial strain to avoid host immune elimination.

Serum-starvation-induced changes in protein synthesis and morphology of Borrelia burgdorferi

Article Abstract:

Results show that serum starvation induces synthesis of over 20 proteins along with cell morphology changes in Borrelia burgdorferi. The study indicates that this adaptation to nutrient changes helps the spirochaete suvive in different hosts and host tissues.
