A new sensitive bioassay for determination of microbially available phosphorus in water

Article Abstract:

A novel approach for determining submicrogram concentrations of microbially available phosphorus (MAP) in water is introduced. This sensitive bacterial bioassay, which was used to analyze the concentrations of MAP in drinking water in Finland, analyzes phosphorus in water samples based on maximum growth of Pseudomonas fluorescens P17 when the energy supply and inorganic nutrients, excluding phosphorus, do not restrict bacterial growth. The method affirms the efficacy of removing phosphorus via the general method of chemical coagulation with polyaluminum chloride.

Fluorescence in situ hybridization using peptide nucleic acid probes for rapid detection of Mycobacterium avium subsp. avium and Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis in potable-water biofilms

Article Abstract:

A high-affinity peptide nucleic acid (PNA) oligonucleotide sequence is presented for detecting Mycobacterium avium bacteria, by the fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) method. It was observed that the PNA FISH method proved to be successful in detection of M. avium subsp. avium spiked in water samples and establishment of biofilm within a propella biofilm reactor fed with potable water from a distribution supply.

Phosphorus and bacterial growth in drinking water

Article Abstract:

Organic carbon regulates the growth of bacteria found in drinking water. In Finland, it has been found that phosphorus also contributes to growth of microbes in drinking water. Phosphorus is used to treat corrosion in water pipelines but compromises the quality of drinking water. New technologies should be developed not only to reduce the total organic carbon but also the amount of phosphates in drinking water.
