A newly identified immunodominant membrane protein (pMB67) involved in Mycoplasma bovis surface antigenic variation

Article Abstract:

A unique, variable surface protein (Vsp)-unrelated membrane protein which is also linked to Mycoplasma bovis surface antigenic variation, is investigated. This protein has an apparent molecular mass of 67 kDa in the type strain PG45 and is found to have a specific epitope, cannot be changed by lipid, does not have cysteine, does not have a Vsp-like repetitive period protein structure, is a predominant antigen recognized during M. bovis infections, undergoes a high rate of phase variation in vitro and is size-variable.

Major membrane proteins and lipoproteins as highly variable immunogenic surface components and strain-specific antigenic markers of Mycoplasma arthritidis

Article Abstract:

Mycoplasma arthritidis strains and substrains express different strain-variant antigens on the cell surface which are integral membrane proteins. These antigens are either non-lipid-modified proteins bound to the membrane hydrophobic domains or lipoproteins bound to the membrane fatty acid moieties. The variation is due to phase switching of the antigens. The antigens control interaction of the pathogen with the host cells and prevent damage by the host's immune system.

Gliding mutants of Mycoplasma mobile: relationships between motility and cell morphology, cell adhesion and microcolony formation

Article Abstract:

Results indicate that gliding feature of mycoplasma mutants is dependent on the cell-associated adherent components. Data further show that gliding activity also aids in the colony formationn in the mycoplasmas.
