Activity of glutaraldehyde at low concentrations against capsid proteins of poliovirus type 1 and echovirus type 25

Article Abstract:

The effects of glutaraldehyde (GTA) on the capsid proteins of poliovirus type 1 and echovirus type 25 were assessed to determine the mode of action of GTA against enteroviruses. The results showed that both virus capsids could react with GTA at low concentrations. SDS-PAGE and immunoblotting analysis showed that GTA treatment produced complexes composed of VP1 and VP3, although the products of different viruses were of different compositions. It is proposed that GTA acts on the lysine residues on the loops of VP1 and VP3.

Comparative sensitivities of Sabin and Mahoney poliovirus type 1 prototype strains and two recent isolates to low concentrations of glutaraldehyde

Article Abstract:

A study on the effect of antigenic differences on the dissimilar sensitivities of Sabin and Mahoney poliovirus type 1 strains to glutaraldehyde (GTA) is presented. Results of the study show that the wild Mahoney strains show lower sensitivities to GTA than the Sabin vaccine strains. Similar studies should be done on PV-2 and PV-3 strains and for other enteroviruses that cause serious illnesses.

Virucidal efficacy of glutaraldehyde against enteroviruses is related to the location of lysine residues in exposed structures of the VP1 capsid protein

Article Abstract:

An investigation into the glutaraldehyde(GTA) sensitivity of seven enteroviruses selected on the basis of differences in the number and position of lysine groups located in the VP1 capsid protein is made. Glutaraldehyde (GTA) is a saturated 5-carbon dialdehyde with powerful biocidal activity against bacteria and their spores, fungi, and viruses.
