Aerobic anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the aerobic anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria with the objective of studying their evolutionary origin. Since the closest phylogenetic relatives of aerobic phototrophic bacteria are the anaerobic purple nonsulfur phototrophic bacteria, these two bacterial groups are compared. Results based on morphology, photosynthetic and metabolic processes indicate that Halobacterium and related species are fundamentally different from the classical photosynthetic bacteria. However, it is premature to state that the bacteria should be considered nonphotosynthetic.

Biology of moderately halophilic aerobic bacteria

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on moderately halophilic aerobic bacteria to investigate their biological characteristics. Results showed that most species of halophilic aerobic bacteria have properties that enable them to rapidly adapt to changes in salt concentration of the environment. Moreover, they also possess other properties that make them potentially useful for several biotechnological applications such as food fermentation.

Bioenergetic aspects of halophilism

Article Abstract:

Halophilic microorganisms spend large amounts of energy to maintain steep gradients of K+ and NA+ concentrations across their cytoplasmic membrane. The energetic cost of salt adaptation can probably determine what kind of metabolism can support life at the highest salt concentration. The halophilic homoacetogenic bacteria uses KCl as an intracellular solute to exist while producing acetate from H2 + CO2.
