An autoregulatory cascade of EGF receptor signaling patterns the Drosophila egg

Article Abstract:

Results of a study showed that the activation of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) stimulates dorsal-anterior follicle cell fate and defines the location of the dorsal appendages in the Drosophila egg. It was observed that there were three distinct stages of dorsal determination which included sequential initiation, amplification and repositioning of EGFR signaling. During this process, a shift from paracrine to autocrine in EGFR signaling occurs and the consequent inhibition of EGFR signaling by Argos alters the profile of activation and positions the dorsal appendages.

Rhomboid proteins: Conserved membrane proteases with divergent biological functions

Article Abstract:

Biochemical reconstitution and high-resolution crystal structures have shown that rhomboid proteins function in diverse processes including quorum sensing in bacteria, mitochondrial membrane fusion, apoptosis, and stem cell differentiation in eukaryotes. The analysis of these novel enzymes has revealed the evolutionary path of rhomboid protein function, which provides insights into the forces that drive the molecular evolution of regulatory mechanisms.

A family of rhomboid-like genes: Drosophila rhomboid-1 and roughoid/rhomboid-2 cooperate to activate EGF receptor signaling

Article Abstract:

Drosophila rhomboid-1 and roughoid/rhomboid-2, a family of rhomboid-like genes, has been studied. Results show they cooperate to activate EGF receptor signaling. The rat-limiting part of Drosophila Egfr signaling is a seven transmembrane domain protein, Rhomboid. Its expression prefigures Egfr signaling.
