Antigenic polymorphism of the lipopolysaccharides from human and animal isolates of Bordetella bronchiseptica

Article Abstract:

Antigenic determinants of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) on Bordetella bronchiseptica cells was examined with the use of six monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against LPS from B. pertussis, B. parapertussis and B. brochiseptica. Heterogeneity of the core, differences in the hinge region between O-chain and core, presence and absence of O-chains, and differences in interactions of LPS with other cell-surface constituents were the four main types of antigenic polymorphism observed in B. brochiseptica LPSs.

Epitopes of Bordetella pertussis lipopolysaccharides as potential markers for typing of isolates with monoclonal antibodies

Article Abstract:

Three hybridomas (P1P3, D7 and 60.5) producing monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against Bordetella pertussis lipopolysaccharide (LPS) were identified. mAb 60.5 bound to the terminal region of a distal trisaccharide composed of N-acetylated amino sugars. D7 reacted with a substructure which can be modified in the B. parapertussis and B. bronchiseptica LPSs by addition of a polymeric O-chain. P1P3 bound to a nonacetylated glucosamine substituted with L-glycero-D-manno-heptose.

Lipopolysaccharide expression within the genus Bordetella: influence of temperature and phase variation

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to examine the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) expression of Bordetella species and its association with growth temperature using the oxidative silver staining of proteinase-K-treated whole bacteria. Bacteria were prepared on Bordet-Gengou agar treated with defibrinated sheep blood. Results indicated differences among the seven Bordetella species in LPS expression. Findings also showed that temperature modulates LPS expression in most Bordetella species.
