Herds and hurdles

Article Abstract:

Most sectors of the Mongolian economy are stagnant or declining, with record livestock numbers not matching population growth, low production of other foodstuffs, and feeble industrial output. Gold extraction doubled in 1995 to surpass 4.5 tonnes, though, and mining in general is strong. Exports of other goods are hurt by high Russian tariffs, and foreign capital investment is slowed by excessive bureaucracy, weak infrastructure, and the lack of an English version of Mongolia's laws. Inflation is moderately lower, at 53%.

Artemisinin and the antimalarial endoperoxides: from herbal remedy to targeted chemotherapy

Article Abstract:

Artemisinin and it's derivatives are endoperoxide-containing compounds that are effective antimalarial drugs for targeted malarial chemotherapy. In the presence of intraparasitic iron, these drugs convert into free radicals and other electrophilic intermediates that alkylate various malaria target proteins. However, first generation endoperoxides have high recrudescence rates, poor bioavailability and short half lifes. The combination of artemisinin with other drugs gives good results.
