Mapping information roadways from sequence to phenotype and across species

Article Abstract:

Computerized databases containing genetic data can make querying and studying the relationships between organisms easy and fast. The World Wide Web contains biological databases describing properties at the organismal, chromosomal and genetic level. The Maize Genome Database and the E. coli Genetic Stock Center Database are two examples of databases that are easy to use with different frontends. Hypertext gives the ability to access other databases for broader research options. Use of standard nomenclature and database maintenance and enhancement are also discussed.

Sex linkage of minisatellite bands in bobcats (Felis rufus)

Article Abstract:

The multilocus probe 33.6 was used to analyze minisatellite DNA profiles for 27 bobcats from the captive colony at the Mississippi State University. Thirty percent of fingerprinting bands in male bobcats are linked to the Y chromosome. This is attributed to the nonrecombinant minisatellite cluster at the Y chromosome. The applications of sex-linked DNA fingerprinting bands on the study and management of F. rufus are discussed.
