Complex pattern formation by Pseudomonas strain KC in response to nitrate and nitrite

Article Abstract:

Pattern formation by enteric bacteria growing on semi-solid agar plates have been previously reported. A similar phenomenon was found in an environmental isolate, Pseudomonas strain KC. Five other species of pseudomonads were tested under similar conditions but none formed patterns. Oxygen microelectrode investigations showed that there is little or no oxygen within the aggregates. The growth of strain KC was progressively restricted in imposed diffusion gradients of NO2- or NO3- of which NO2- was the stronger inhibitor.

A physiological model for the control of erythromycin production in batch and cyclic fed batch culture

Article Abstract:

The differences in antibiotic production dynamics resulting from changing the growth-associated production in nitrogen-limited culture and growth-dissociated production in carbon-limited culture are attributed to growth kinetics. Observations indicated that the affinity for nitrate was lower than that for glucose causing the nitrogen limitation to take place throughout the culture. Glucose limitation happens later which corresponds with the induction of antibiotic production.

Chemical and structural characterization of exopolymers produced by Pseudomonas sp. NCIMB 2021 in continuous culture

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze the chemical and structural properties of exopolymers generated by Pseudomonas sp. NCIMB 2021 in continuous culture. A strain of the marine isolate Pseudomonas sp. NCIMB 2021 was prepared as batch cultures at 25 degrees C. Results indicated differences between exopolymers. The capsular exopolymer had minimized helical content and an increased aggregated strand content.
