Assessment of lectin-binding analysis for in situ detection of glycoconjugates in biofilm systems

Article Abstract:

Lectin-binding analysis for in situ detection of glycoconjugates in biofilm systems has been assessed using fully hydrated river biofilms. Lectin-binding analysis was found to be able to stain glycoconjugates within biofilm communities.Biofilms were stained iwth various fluor-conjugated lectins and three-dimensionally examined using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Chemical heterogeneities within extracellular biofilm locations can be identified to examine the role of extracellular polymeric substances in environmental biofilm systems.

Properties of the major non-specific endonuclease from the strict anaerobe Fibrobacter succinogenes and evidence for disulfide bond formation in vivo

Article Abstract:

The major non-specific endonuclease from the strict anaerobe Fibrobacter succinogenes has been studied with the finding of evidence for disulfide bond formation in vivo. Magnesium was found to be required for nucleolytic activity, although calcium was not. Manganese ions substituted for magnesium, giving, however, less stimulation. The first indication has been found in a strict anaerobe for a functional periplasmic disulfide bond forming system, similar phenotypically to Dsb systems in facultative and aerobic bacteria.

Response of a strict anaerobe to oxygen: survival strategies in Desulfovibrio gigas

Article Abstract:

Results demonstrate that although growth of Desulfovibrio gigas is totally inhibited in the presence of oxygen, true to its anaerobic nature, it attained a growth rate of 70% upon switching back to anoxic conditions. Oxygen exposure enhanced catalase levels and activity without changing superoxide dismutase and glutathione reductase enzymes. Oxygenation also increases protein level by 12%, including heatshock protein 60 and nucleotide level by 20%.
