Biodegradation of ortho-cresol by a mixed culture of nitrate-reducing bacteria growing on toluene

Article Abstract:

The toluene-dependent degradation of o-cresol by nitrate-reducing bacteria was investigated. The results showed that o-cresol is metabolized only when about 0.5 to 1.0 mg/l of toluene has been degraded. About 73% of the carbon from o-cresol is converted to carbon dioxide and 23% was assimilated into biomass. These results indicate that o-cresol is degraded by a cometabolic reaction in which toluene acts as an inducer of o-cresol-degrading enzymes. Based on the results, a mathematical model describing the kinetics of o-cresol degradation is presented.

Engineering of stable recombinant bacteria for production of chiral medium-chain-length poly-3-hydroxyalkanoates

Article Abstract:

Researchers describe using recombinant bacteria to produce poly-3-hydroxyalkanoates (PHA). PHA are of interest because they could be used as biodegradable plastics. The molecular weight of the PHA can be varied by varying the level of the inducer.
