Old and new concepts for the role of chi in bacterial recombination

Article Abstract:

A new model for the role of chi, DNA sequence 5'(GCTGGTGG)3', in activating the recombination of linear DNA with circular DNA in Escherichia coli contradicts a previous model. According to the older theory, the RecBCD enzyme enters DNA at the double-chain end and travels between the chains at different rates till it meets chi. On meeting chi, the enzyme cuts one of the unwound DNA chains forming a single-chain end which recombines with the circular DNA. According to the new theory, the RecBCD enzyme cuts the DNA at the point of entry to chi, and chi's function is to suppress this exonuclease activity of the RecBCD enzyme.

In vivo recombination between two strains of the genus Nucleopolyhedrovirus in its natural host, Spodoptera exigua

Article Abstract:

The genetically-altered strain of Nucleopolyhedrovirus (SeMNPV) that has been isolated from Spodoptera exigua could recombine with parental viruses to produce new genotypes if these viruses are introduced into natural populations of the virus. The new genotypes could replace the natural strains and they could also have a different biological activity. It is therefore prudent the effect of SeMNPV before they are used as natural insecticides for S. exigua.

RNA recombination in animal and plant viruses

Article Abstract:

The mechanisms for ribonucleic acid (RNA) recombination of viruses were described. RNA recombination were classified as homologous, aberrant homologous and illegitimate recombinations. Recombination in picornaviruses, coronaviruses, alpha viruses and plant viruses were likewise discussed. A model for the copy choice mechanism for recombination in RNA viruses was also elucidated.
