Bm kettin, homologue of the Drosophila kettin gene, is located on the Z chromosome in Bombyx mori and is not dosage compensated

Article Abstract:

Lack of dosage compensation is a general rule in Bombyx mori based on data from a new study. In this insect the heterogametic sex is female and the sex determination system is referred to as ZZ/ZW. The twofold difference in Bm kettin expression between males and females may help to explain the sexual difference in the wing flapping activity observed in some groups of Lepidoptera. Nucloeotide sequence polymorphisms were analyzed to confirm that one of the cDNAs came from the Z chromosome.

Absence of dosage compensation at the transcription level of a sex-linked gene in a female heterogametic insect, Bombyx mori

Article Abstract:

In female heterogametic organisms few studies report on sex-linked gene dosage compensation. Three RAPDs and one RFLP marker mapped to the Z chromosome as candidate genes to test for dosage compensation have been studied with the goal of evaluating the possibility that the sex-linked genes of in Bombyx mori, a female heterogametic silkworm are dosage-compensated. No dosage compensation was found at the transcription level of a sex-linked gene of the insect.

The influence of triploidy on gene expression in the silkworm, Bombyx mori

Article Abstract:

Influence of triploidy on gene expression in silkworms, Bombyx mori, is discussed. The insect should be good for study that can help in understanding dosage regulation of ploidy series in animal system so an investigation into whether aneuploid effects are cumulative or whether dosage compensation occurs was carried out and gene dosage effects were studied by varying ploidy with genomic balance maintained vs aneuploids.
