Branhamella catarrhalis: epidemiology, surface antigenic structure, and immune response

Article Abstract:

The surface of the pathogenic bacteria Branhamella catarrhalis contains outer membrane proteins, lipooligosaccharide, and pili. B. catarrhalis is the causal organism of otitis media in children and lower respiratory tract infections in adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Its presence in the respiratory tract of humans is a dynamic process, as new strains are constantly acquired and removed. The outer membrane proteins can be used as vaccine antigens. The mucosal immune response is involved in the response to B. catarrhalis infection.
