Cellular events during development of the olfactory sense organs in Drosophila melanogaster

Article Abstract:

A study of cellular events during olfactory sense organ development in Drosophila melanogaster using sensory cell markers and the lineage tracer BrdU reveals that the choice of a founder cell (FC) is a prerequisite for the initiation of olfactory sensillum development. The FC forms the presensillum-cluster of a few cells 6 hours after pupariation, and these cells yield the total cell population of the sensillum after one replication cycle. Selection of mutant FC leads to a failure of differentiation in the FC, affecting the initial stages of sensillum development.

Integrins and the development of three-dimensional structure in the Drosophila compound eye

Article Abstract:

The development of the cell-cell and the cell-extracellular matrix contacts in each unit eye of the Drosophila compound eye is controlled by integrins. Rhabdomeres are formed by the involution of the apical surfaces of the photoreceptors into the epithelium followed by their elongation. These rhabdomeres then orient along the ommatidial optical axis by anchoring to the cone cell plate. Mutants flies with defective integrins display defects in the cone cell plate and focal adhesions of the eye pigment cells.

Changing distributions of extracellular matrix components during early wing morphogenesis in Drosophila

Article Abstract:

Immunocytochemical studies of collagen IV, laminin, and 2G2 antigen (2G2-Ag), three extracellular matrix (ECM) components in Drosophila, reveal the differential distribution of these ECM components during the initial stages of wing development. In the early stages, the wing pouch epithelial cells' basal surfaces contain all the three ECM components, while during the pupal period, 2G2-Ag disappears. The pattern of wing veination is regulated by these components.
