Cloning of a novel bacteria-binding receptor structurally related to scavenger receptors and expressed in a subset of macrophages

Article Abstract:

An extracellular region with a short spacer, a C-terminal cysteine-rich domain, a collagenous domain with a 89 Gly-Xaa-Yaa repeat, a transmembrane domain and an intracellular N-terminal domain characterize the new murine plasma membrane protein found in macrophage subpopulations. Immunohistochemical staining and in situ hybridization reveal that the protein expression is restricted to the margins of the spleen and lymph node medullary cord, and not seen in the lung or liver. This protein associates with acetylated LDL and bacteria, but not with yeast.

EGF receptor activation: Push comes to shove

Article Abstract:

A study provides evidence that the tyrosine kinase domain of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is activated by the formation of an asymmetric dimer, with one kinase domain in the EGF-mediated dimmer activating the other through an allosteric mechanism. The study sheds light on the regulatory mechanisms controlling this important group of receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs).
