Molecular fingerprinting of dairy microbial ecosystems by use of temporal temperature and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis

Article Abstract:

A rapid, semisystematic approach based on genetic profiling by temporal temperature gradient electrophoresis (TTGE) for bacteria with low-G+C-content genomes and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) for those with medium- and high-G+C-content genomes is developed. These methods have proven to be powerful methods for identifying different bacterial species within the cheese ecosystems.

Bacterial community composition in Lake Tanganyika: Vertical and horizontal heterogeneity

Article Abstract:

Vertical and latitudinal differences in bacterial community composition (BCC) in Lake Tanganyika were studied during the dry season of 2002 by means of denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis analysis of PCR-amplified 16S RNA fragments. The number of bands per sample increased with bacterial production in the epilimnion of the lake, suggesting a positive diversity-productivity relationship.

Assessment of genes associated with Streptococcus mutans biofilm morphology

Article Abstract:

Seventeen different pulsed-field gel electrophoresis patterns of genomic DNA are identified in Streptococcus mutans organisms, isolated clinically from whole saliva. It is found that the Streptococcus mutans isolates showed different abilities to form biofilms on polystyrene surfaces in semi defined minimal medium cultures.
