Virulence and drug susceptibility of Mycobacterium celatum

Article Abstract:

Research demonstrates differences in the virulence and drug susceptibility of smooth transparent and smooth opaque colonies of Mycobacterium celatum. Data show that transparent cells maintain their coccobacillary form whereas opaque cells form long filaments in the hosts. Drug susceptibility studies show that the transparent cells are virulent types.

Phenotypic consequences of red-white colony type variation in Mycobacterium avium

Article Abstract:

Results demonstrate that transparent derivatives of red opaque and White opaque clones of Mycobacterium avium preserve their Congo red binding properties. Data suggest that manifestation of opaque-transparent morphotype is independent of the red-white switch. Transparent derivatives of White opaque coloniesare are more resistant to antibiotics.

Colony morphotypes on Congo red agar segregate along species and drug susceptibility lines in the Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare complex

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to determine whether a biological stain utilized to evaluate cell-surface differences in bacteria could advance novel information on cell-surface variation in the Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare complex. Results indicated that the white segregants of M avium were more flocculent and more resistant to ciprofloxacin and rifamycin drugs than the red segregants.
