Competition for factors and cellular resources as a principle of pattern formation in Hydra. I. Increase of the potentials for head and bud formation and rescue of the regeneration-deficient mutant reg-16 by treatment with diacylglycerol and arachidonic acid

Article Abstract:

Examination of the formation of head and bud in different species of the genus hydra reveals that presence of a just-emerging or latent bud is responsible for the impairment of the head-forming ability in the mutant strain reg-16 of Hydra magnipapillata and in a Hydra Vulgaris strain. Low level of head-promoting factors accounts for the significant level of head inhibition in reg-16, and low efficiency to utilize the resources explains the low head activation level. The influence of dioctanoylglycerol and arachidonic acid on the pattern formation in Hydra is discussed.
