Correlation of biological activity and reactor performance in biofiltration of toluene with the fungus Paecilomyces variotii CBS115145

Article Abstract:

A biofiltration system inoculated with the mold Paecilomyces variotti CBS115145 showed a toluene elimination capacity higher than the values usually reported for bacteria was studied. It showed that the enzymatic activities of P. variotti were similar to those reported for bacteria which explain the high performance of the fungal biofilters by the increased transfer of the hydrophobic compounds from the gas phase to the mycelia overcoming the transfer problems associated with the flat bacterial biofilms.

Variability of bacterial biofilms of the "tina" wood vats used in the Ragusano cheese-making process

Article Abstract:

The Ragusano bacterial ecosystem is studied by conducting molecular fingerprinting at different times during the ripening and biofilms from the wooden vats called 'tinas'. The results have shown that the tina biofilms have efficiently released lactic acid bacteria into the raw milk, making the acidification process faster, and that the tina's use is very important for raw milks with low initial counts of lactic acid bacteria.

Biological filtration limits carbon availability and affects downstream biofilm formation and community structure

Article Abstract:

A submerged microtiter plate assay was assessed for direct and quick monitoring of biofilm formation by subjecting the plates to a continuous flow of either secondary effluent or biofilter-treated secondary effluent. The results of the study suggest that carbon limitation may not be effective as a barrier to biofilm growth.
