Coupling between transcription termination and RNA polymerase inchworming

Article Abstract:

The mechanism of termination of transcription involves straining and relaxation of RNA polymerase where inchworming plays an important role. The leap of the RNA and DNA footprints coincides with termination and the signal to do so is controlled by the oligo(T) tracks in rho-independent terminators. If the leap does not take place the RNA chain is not released. The elongation of the ternary complex is controlled by interaction of proteins and nucleic acids and termination stops these interactions.

Isolation and characterization of sigma(sup)70 -retaining transcription elongation complexes from Escherichia coli

Article Abstract:

Sigma(sup)70 -retaining transcription elongation complexes of Escherichia coli mediate multiple rounds of transcription, indicating that they play an important role in gene expression and regulation in bacteria. The sigma(sup)70 subunit is derived from the core RNA polymerase and elongation complex population follows growth phase reaching a maximum during the stationary phase.

A ratchet mechanism of transcription elongation and its control

Article Abstract:

A general mechanism that governs RNA polymerase (RNAP) movement and response to regulatory inputs like pauses, terminators, and elongation factors is described. It is showed that E. coli RNAP moves by a complex Brownian ratchet mechanism that acts prior to phosphodiester bond formation.
