Coupling of methanothermobacter thermautotrophicus methane formation and growth in fed-batch and continuous cultures under different [H.sub.2] gassing regimens

Article Abstract:

The hydrogen-dependent coupling between methanogenesis and growth was studied by culturing the Methanothermobacter thermautotrophicus in a fed-batch fermentor and chemostat under a variety of hydrogen gassing regimens while continuously recording the [p.sub.H.sub.2] value. At low [p.sub.H.sub.2] value the "specific maintenance" diminished and the specific growth yields approached [Y.sub.C[H.sub.4]]max, indicating that growth and methanogenesis became fully coupled.

Coaggregation facilitates interspecies hydrogen transfer between Pelotomaculum thermopropionicum and Methanothermobacter thermautotrophicus

Article Abstract:

The coaggregation of a syntrophic propionate-oxidizing bacterium, Pelotomaculum thermopropionicum strain SI (13,14), Methanothermobacter thernmautotrophicus strain detlaH (33), in cocultures is investigated. Considering that the mean cell-to-cell distance in the randomly dispersed culture was approximately 30 microm, it is obvious that close physical contact of these organisms by coaggregation is indispensable for efficient syntrophic propionate oxidation.

Bdellovibrio predation in the presence of decoys: Three-way bacterial interactions revealed by mathematical and experimental analyses

Article Abstract:

Three-member cultures containing predator, prey and nonsusceptible bacterial decoys were studied through mathematically modeled data. It was found that the mathematical model accounts for both negative and positive effects of predator-prey-decoy interactions in the closed batch environment.
