Cysteine metabolism in Legionella pneumophila: Characterization of an L-cystine-utilizing mutant

Article Abstract:

Growth of Legionella pneumophila on buffered charcoal-yeast extract (BCYE) medium is dependent on L-cysteine which is added in excess over what is required for nutrition and thus the biochemical and genetic bases for this unusual requirement is analyzed and determined that much of the L-cysteine in BCYE medium is rapidly oxidized to L-cystine and is unavailable to the bacteria. Results provide biochemical evidence to support the general view that Legionella pneumophila is restricted to an intracellular lifestyle in natural environments by an in ability to utilize cystine.

DNA polymorphisms in strains of Legionella pneumophila serogroups 3 and 4 detected by macrorestriction analysis and their use for epidemiological investigation of nosocomical legionellosis

Article Abstract:

Macrorestriction analysis by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and the restriction enzymes SfiI and NotI is the best method for subtyping the Legionella pneumophila serogroups 3 and 4. The pathogenic strain and 11 unrelated strains of the serogroup 3 had ten different genomic DNA restriction patterns while in serogroup 4 all the five unrelated strains had different restriction patterns. Thus the serogroup 4 shows DNA polymorphism. and cannot be separated from the serogroup 3 using monoclonal antigens because the surface of both serogroups contains the same antigens.

Legionella pneumophila in cooling towers : Fluctuations in counts, determination of genetic variability by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), and persistence of PFGE patterns

Article Abstract:

The concentrations of Legionella pneumophila in cooling towers vary considerably over short period of time, producing significant fluctuations throughout the year. Despite genetic variability, in small geographical areas the same indistinguishable pulsed-field gel electrophoresis patterns shared among different cooling towers and persist over time.
