DNA methyltransferases Dnmt3a and Dnmt3b are essential for de novo methylation and mammalian development

Article Abstract:

DNA methyltransferases Dnmt3a and Dnmt3b are discussed relative to the requirement for them in de novo methylation and mammalian development. Both genes were inactivated by gene targeting in ES cells and mice. Inactivation has no effect on maintenance of imprinted methylation patterns. Mutations of human DNMT3B are seen in ICF syndrome, hypomethylation of pericentromeric repeats. Dnmt3a and Dnmt3 bare genes which make up the murine Dnmt3 family. They are much expressed in undifferentiated ES cells and downregulated after differentiation for low levels in adult somatic tissues.

Male-to-female sex reversal in mice lacking Fibroblast growth factor 9

Article Abstract:

Sex reversal from male to female in mice having no Fibroblast growth factor 9 (Fgf9) is discussed. The phenomenon shows that FGF signaling in testicular embryogenesis has a novel role. Embryogenesis of several organs is directed by Fgfs, and they may act in reproductive system development and sex determination in many species.
