Degradation of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans by the white rot fungus Phanerochaete sordida YK-624

Article Abstract:

The white rot fungus Phanerochaete sordida YK-624 degrades a mixture of 10 kinds of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans. The fungi also shows structurally independent degradation of tetra- to octachloro substituents. This indicates that the degradation involves a free-radical mechanism with little specificity. The degradation produces 4,5-dichlorocatechol and tetrachlorocatechol as metabolites of 2,3,7,8-tetra and octaCDD respectively.

Bleaching of hardwood kraft pulp with manganese peroxidase from Phanerochaete sordida YK-624 without addition of MnSO4

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on the bleaching of kraft pulp with manganese peroxidase (MnP) from the Phanerochaete sordida YK-624 fungus without the addition of MnSO4. Oxalate was used as the Mn3+-chelating and reductive agent. Results showed that oxalate facilitates the bleaching of the kraft pulp with MnP by effectively using manganese originally found in the pulp. The oxidation of Mn2+ by MnP was found to be dependent on the presence of organic acids produced by the fungus.

Xylosylation of phenolic hydroxyl groups of the monomeric lignin model compounds 4-methylguaiacol and vanillyl alcohol by Coriolus versicolor

Article Abstract:

The xylosylation of phenolic hydroxyl group of lignin moel compounds in cultures of Coriolus versicolor was demonstrated. Experiments involved the incubation of a mixture of 4-methylguaiacol (MeG) and commercial UDP-xylose with mycelia cell extracts. UDP-xylose was transformed into MeG-xyloside in the process. Results indicate that UDP-xylotransferase is connected to the bioconversion of phenolic hydroxyl groups of lignin model compounds.
