Degradation of trimethylbenzene isomers by an enrichment culture under N2O-reducing conditions

Article Abstract:

The anaerobic degradation of monoaromatic hydrocarbons such as n-propylbenzene, isopropylbenzene and trimethylbenzene (TMB) was analyzed in an enrichment culture of TMB under N2O-reducing conditions. The anaerobic degradation of 1,2,4-TMB and 1,3,5-TMB under N2O-reducing conditions is characterized by an increase in the rate of nitrate reduction and microbial growth. Furthermore, 1,2,4-TMB and 1,3,5-TMB were degraded in the enrichment culture while benzene, ethyl benzene and 2-ethyltoluene were not degraded.

Anaerobic degradation of pristane in nitrate-reducing microcosms and enrichment cultures

Article Abstract:

Cultures enriched from contaminated aquifer material degraded pristane under nitrate-reducing conditions. Analysis of slow pristane degradation in enrichment cultures containing denitrifying microcosms indicated the complete mineralization of the compound within 102 days of incubation in nitrate-reducing conditions. Furthermore, low-molecular-weight polar compounds such as acetate and propionate were not detectable at the end of the incubation period.

Degradation of p-xylene by a denitrifying enrichment culture

Article Abstract:

Microbes capable of growing on p-xylene, m-xylene, or toluene underdenitrifying conditions were isolated from an aquifer contaminated with diesel fuel. Theisolates were grown in enrichment cultures and carbon mass and electron balances weredetermined. Oxidation of p-xylene in the cultures produced CO2 and was coupled tonitrate reduction. Benzene, ethylbenzene and o-xylene were not degraded in thecultures.
