Development of methods to detect "Norwalk-like viruses" (NLVs) and hepatitis A virus in delicatessen foods: application to a food-borne NLV outbreak

Article Abstract:

A rapid and simple method for detecting Norwalk-like viruses and hepatitis A virus in food samples is presented. It uses HAV- or NLV-specific primers and reverse transcription PCR.

Development of a reverse transcription-PCR-DNA enzyme immunoassay for detection of "Norwalk-like" viruses and hepatitis A virus in stooll and shellfish

Article Abstract:

An immunoassay is described that can detect Norwalk virus and hepatitis A virus in stool samples and oysters. The Norwalk virus is the most common cause of non-bacterial gastroenteritis. The immunoassay can be automated and takes less time than some other methods.

Detection and analysis of a small round-structured virus strain in oysters implicated in an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis

Article Abstract:

The analysis and detection of oyster tissues during the outbreak of shellfish-transmitted viral gastroenteritis in 1993 revealed a small round-structured virus strain. The study involved an analysis of human calicivirus sequences by reverse transcriptase PCR using different primer sets. Hybridization technique confirmed the specificity of the amplicons obtained from shellfish samples. A comparison of amplicons and stools of infected persons helped in characterization of the virus.
